Dear Leah Eichler,

I read the article “Domestic Violence: Rape Hurts Our Economy Too” and it was very interesting to me. It informed me more about how Domestic Violence can affect people, not only in their everyday life, but in their work. People should be aware of all the affects of Domestic Violence, not just the ones they feel are most important.
The article talks about people that were affected by Domestic Violence, have taken off from work for weeks at a time. Domestic Violence does have an effect on your life and work.
-         “According to The American Institute on Domestic Violence, U.S. victims lose nearly eight million days of paid work each year, the equivalent of more than 32,000 full-time jobs. In the UK, 53 per cent of female victims of domestic abuse miss work at least three days a month and 75 percent are targeted at work.
People feel as though the victims need time off of work for weeks at a time missing hours of work. But to me, if you really felt like you needed counseling or time off you could take a half day for one week or use your free days to go see a counselor. There’s no reason that you should stop your entire life because someone else tried to ruin it.

Dear Editor,
The article “Essex County observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month” was very interesting to read. I was glad to see that Essex County has been trying to help victims of Domestic Violence. It almost seemed like no one in the City or anyone around me really cared that much about Domestic Violence or just never thought of it as a big deal.
I feel as though more people should be aware of Domestic Violence. If everyone knew about it and tried to help out, then maybe it wouldn’t be as bad.
-“Domestic Violence is a serious crime and should and unfortunately, it can be found in every community. Although significant strides have been made over the last several decades, the public must be vigilant and proactive so domestic violence cases are addressed and victims are treated safely with dignity and respect,” DiVincenzo said.
Maybe instead of looking at basics Domestic Violence we should all try to help out the victims and prevent others from becoming a victim. But on the other hand it is important that you understand what it is and who is affected most. This is a big problem because it happens often. More people should take action.

Counter Argument

Counter Argument on Domestic Violence

Although you should be aware of whether you're in an abusive relationship or not, you don't want to start making hasty generalizations on the people who aren't causing harm to come to you or be in-denial about what's going on.

Domestic Violence and The Great Debaters

What Are The Causes of Domestic Violence?

1.  According to a Study done at Princeton University, the cause of domestic violence could be:
  • Social behavior that is learned
  • Psychopathic or dysfunctional personality
  • Biological or genetic
  • Interactions of a family
  • Childhood trauma

Possible solutions

  • Build more shelters
  • Have more counseling
  • Talk to someone (clergy, doctor, teacher, adult, police)
  • Prepare to leave the abuser

How does domestic violence connect to the movie "The Great Debaters"?

The debate team was affected by violence and racisim.  They watched someone be hung.
They also were verbally abused by their opponents.  These are the same things that someone who is in an abusive relationship might go through.  It is important to remember that some things have not changed even though this movie took place when blacks and white could not share the same things.  The movie shows a good example of behavior that is learned by a society.
