Domestic Violence and The Great Debaters

What Are The Causes of Domestic Violence?

1.  According to a Study done at Princeton University, the cause of domestic violence could be:
  • Social behavior that is learned
  • Psychopathic or dysfunctional personality
  • Biological or genetic
  • Interactions of a family
  • Childhood trauma

Possible solutions

  • Build more shelters
  • Have more counseling
  • Talk to someone (clergy, doctor, teacher, adult, police)
  • Prepare to leave the abuser

How does domestic violence connect to the movie "The Great Debaters"?

The debate team was affected by violence and racisim.  They watched someone be hung.
They also were verbally abused by their opponents.  These are the same things that someone who is in an abusive relationship might go through.  It is important to remember that some things have not changed even though this movie took place when blacks and white could not share the same things.  The movie shows a good example of behavior that is learned by a society.
